Archivist
The Charleston Museum (Charleston, SC) seeks an experienced individual with a can-do, positive attitude for the full-time position of Archivist.  The qualified candidate will possess a B.A. in history or related field (preferred M.A. in history or library science) and one to three years experience in an archives, manuscript repository or library.  Required: Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of archives administration and current archival preservation/conservation techniques, and familiarity with Charleston and South Carolina history.  Primary responsibilities include management of museum archival/library collections, cataloguing of such collections, responding to public inquiries concerning archival materials, assisting the exhibition of archival materials, and other associated duties.  Please send resume and salary requirements to Director, The Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting St., Charleston, SC  29403; or e-mail jobs@charlestonmuseum.org.  Application deadline: December 31, 2007.

 

Public Information Coordinator
JOB DESCRIPTION:  Plans, performs and contracts the primary interpretive services for Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site.  Develops, conducts and contracts interpretive services to connect the visitor to the site's historic significance and themes through uniform guided tours, costumed interpretation, demonstrations, waysides, exhibits, brochures and Discover Carolina field trips.  Uses a variety of marketing techniques to promote the park, family oriented programs, research discoveries, the Park System, Discover Carolina program and the state.  Assists in the preparation of work plans, interpretive budgets, scheduling, program evaluations, purchasing and other administrative duties.  Provides expert technical assistance in the development and upgrading of interpretive displays, waysides, exhibits, orientation signage and other passive interpretive services.  Provides expert assistance in developing a Comprehensive Interpretive Plan.  Conducts research in areas relative to Charles Towne Landing to enhance the interpretation and management of the resources.  Coordinates volunteers in conducting workshops and other park projects. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's degree or a bachelor's degree and two years experience in the interpretation, public history, or the museum field.

Interpretation Manager
The Culture & Heritage Museums is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual with a strong background and passion for interpretation and education to fill the newly created position of Interpretation Manager. The Interpretation Manager must be both a leader and team player as he/she builds a flexible and dynamic interpretive team. University of South Carolina Public History/Museum Studies:

Museum Studies. The University of South Carolina Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Public History/Museum Studies to begin August 16, 2007. Ph.D. and strong research agenda required. The successful candidate will teach graduate courses within the Museum Studies component of the department's award-winning Public History Program, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her areas of expertise. Professional museum experience is desirable, as the faculty member will work closely with the university's McKissick Museum and co-direct the interdisciplinary certificate program in Museum Management. Experience with new media would be a valuable asset in the Museum Studies curriculum. Director of Interpretation

The South Carolina State Museum is the largest and most comprehensive museum in the state and we're looking for a focused, creative and energetic overachiever to lead the newly formed Department of Interpretation, which is a consolation of collections, public programs, and education departments.

(Tell me more!) The Director of Interpretation will be a member of senior management and will report directly to the executive director. The successful candidate will work in conjunction with the executive director to develop content strategies for new exhibits, public and educational programs. In addition the director will develop methods to increase visitation and revenues, expand partnerships and access budgetary and staffing needs for the department along with directly supervising 5 full-time staff from curatorial, public program and education.

Exceptional written and verbal skills are a must along with possessing a sense of humor and the ability to handle multiple tasks.

In order to be considered the successful candidate will have a minimum of a BA/BS with 7-10 years supervisory experience in museums, business or entertainment setting.
