COLUMBIA, S.C. - All too often, museum collections can seem as if they
are in a bubble, disconnected from the world around them. The SC
Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum is trying to change that
perception with a special tour program this spring that combines museum
tours with cemetery and monument tours in Columbia.
Krissy Dunn Johnson, Curator of History at the museum and author of the
new book No Holier Spot of Ground: Confederate Monuments and Cemeteries
of South Carolina, will conduct two tour options on four dates that
explain the interconnected history of the museum, Columbia, and the
city's prominent Civil War monuments and cemeteries.
The first tour, "The SC Confederate Relic Room and Elmwood Cemetery,"
will be offered twice: 10:00 a.m. on May 16 and 2:00 p.m. on May 31.
This tour begins at the museum with a specialized talk and gallery tour.
The tour then moves to Elmwood Cemetery. It includes stories of those
buried there who donated items to the museum or even helped with its
creation in 1896. This session will detail how wartime death influenced
the formation of Confederate memory in Columbia.
The second tour, "The SC Confederate Relic Room and the State House,"
will also be offered twice: 10:00 a.m. on June 6 and 2:00 p.m. on June
14. This tour begins at the museum with a specialized talk and gallery
tour. Next, a visit to Trinity Episcopal Church graveyard will detail
how wartime constraints influenced the creation of Confederate memory in
Columbia. Following the cemetery walk, participants will visit the State
House grounds and discuss the beginnings of public Confederate
monumentation in the Palmetto State.
Tickets for each session are $12 for adults, $8 for students. Joint
tickets for both sessions are available at a discounted rate of $20 for
adults, $14 for students. Reservations are required, 803-737-8095. For
more information, visit www.crr.sc.gov/events/tours/
<http://www.crr.sc.gov/events/tours/> . Participants must provide their
own transportation between the museum and other locations. Directions
will be provided.
Founded in 1896, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is
the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South
Carolina's military history from the Revolutionary War to the current
War on Terror.
