"Armed Forces Day"
Saturday May 16 at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center
Come join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as "Music in the Mountains 2009" continues with the Hagood Mill playing host for a free day of fun and great music Saturday, May 16. The mill site is pleased to present the award-winning old time string band, the Blue Ridge Rounders, on the outdoor stage from 1:00 till 3:00. This is one of the finest old time bands in the region...their pickin' and singin' will have you tapping both feet! Opening at 12:00 will be the Classic Stringers, a great Upstate home-school orchestra, conducted by Donna Ringenberg Bring out that stringed instrument and join in one of the jams at the site.
In celebration of Armed Forces Day, there will be a "War Between the States" encampment of Hart's Battery of Hampton's Legion on the site complete with canon. These dedicated individuals participate in reenactments at all the major battle sites and are always pleased to explain and interpret the life of a soldier in the 1860's.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket. The entertainment will run from 12:00 till 3:00.The site itself will be open from 10:00 until 4:00 with the old gristmill running and a variety of folklife demonstrations.
Hagood Mill operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.
The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, musical instrument building and more! Hagood Mill's 1890 Cotton Gin will run several times throughout the day.
There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! So, head on out, grab a plate of Barbeque and enjoy a day at the Mill. Show your support for the Mill and the Pickens County Museum by joining them at this monthly Third Saturday event. The Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just 3 miles north of Pickens or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 off SC Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Hagood Mill is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00, to tour the buildings and grounds and to visit the Mill Site Gift Shop.
