A Day of Autumn Fun Offered at Historic Price House
Woodruff, SC, October 16, 2009 -- Come gather ‘round the fire, roast
hot dogs and marshmallows, and be mesmerized by stories of times past.
Historic Price House’s annual Autumn Fun event is Saturday, October
24, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Autumn Fun is a perfect way for
families or children’s groups to spend a crisp autumn day. The event
features guided tours of the Price House, exciting games from the
early 1800s, and fascinating stories from a professional storyteller.
Blacksmith Bruce Mills will be on site to demonstrate metal working
techniques of the period. Hot dogs and marshmallows are roasted over
an open fire.
Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for ages 6-17, and free for 5 and
younger. All food and activities are included in the admission price.
The event takes place rain or shine.
To get to Autumn Fun at Price House, take I-26 to Hwy 221 (Exit 28),
southeast of Spartanburg. Take Hwy 221 south toward Woodruff. Turn
left onto Hobbysville Road, right onto Price House Road, and then
right onto Oak View Farms Road. The entrance to the site is on the
left.
Thomas and Ann Price built the three-story brick Price House on their
2,000 acre plantation in 1795. Thomas operated a general store and a
post office as well as a “house of publick entertainment” (a tavern or
inn), which provided room and board for stagecoach travelers. The
plantation’s two-dozen enslaved people performed much of the work for
these enterprises. In addition to the house, the site features a
kitchen building, a slave cabin, and a nature trail.
Historic Price House is owned and operated by the Spartanburg County
Historical Association (SCHA). Founded in 1957, SCHA explores and
preserves our region’s history by collecting and sharing the stories
and artifacts of the people who shaped that history. In addition to
Price House, the Historical Association operates the Spartanburg
Regional History Museum, the Seay House, and Walnut Grove Plantation.
