"The History of the Gillespie Rifle"

September 18th Presentation by Dennis Glazener

coupled with preview of "Lock, Stock & Barrel" exhibition at the Pickens
County Museum

The public is invited to enjoy this special free program on Friday,
September 18. This evening starts at 5:00 p.m. with a sneak preview of
the "Lock, Stock & Barrel: Hunting in a Different Era" exhibition that
fills two of the Pickens County Museum's changing exhibit galleries.

The museum's G1 gallery will hold displays of flintlock and
percussion style rifles and features an original 1846 Gillespie Rifle.
Shooting bags, powder horns, and a special exhibit of turkey calls on
loan from the National Wild Turkey Federation in Edgefield help round
out this show. Don't miss the Sealevel gallery and its "Trading Post"
setting highlighting items like the ones once traded in our area at the
Beamer Trading Post in Estatoee Valley.

From 6:00 until 6:30 p.m. the author Dennis Glazener will present a
"History of the Gillespie Rifle" program in the LaVonne Nalley Piper
Auditorium. Dressed in 1820s attire, Mr. Glazener, author of the book
"The Gillespie Gun Makers of East Fork, NC," will tell about the early
days of the Gillespie family and its move to the Old Pendleton District
of SC. He will explain how John Gillespie and his sons designed the
Gillespie rifle and will display his original Mathew Gillespie rifle.

From 6:30 until 7:00 you can participate in a question and answer
period and from 7:00 until 7:30 the evening will wrap up with a book
signing. Bring your copy of Mr. Glazener's book or purchase one for $
20.00 at this program. Mr. Glazener is graciously donating $ 5.00 from
each of his book sales this evening to the Pickens County Museum.

This program is part of the museum's continuing effort to provide a
variety of entertaining and educational programming for the community.
The Pickens County Museum of Art & History is funded in part by Pickens
County, members and friends of the museum and a grant from the South
Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National
