"Deep Winter Blues"
Saturday, February 20 at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center
Hasn't it been a cold winter? Come join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as "Music in the Mountains 2010" starts plowing through the New Year with the Hagood Mill playing host for a free day of fun and some real foot stomping, down-home, roots and blues music Saturday, February 20. From Noon to 2:00 in the Visitors' Center will be SC Folk Heritage Award winning blues guitarist, Steve McGaha and harmonica man, Freddie Vanderford. These guys are some of the best proponents of their styles round' these parts! At 2:00, Freddie will give a free blues harmonica workshop...bring a key of "C" harp. The site itself will be open from 10:00 until 4:00 with the old gristmill running and a variety of folklife demonstrations. Come experience a real swaying to the blues, toe-tapping concert in a warm, intimate setting. Warm your heart with some great musicians and get rid of those deep winter blues! Seating is limited and first-come, first-served. Workshop is open to any and all at 2:00.
Other activities for the day will include, next to the old mill from Noon till' 2:00, a "fire-making" session with Roger Lindsay, letting kids and adults experience the timeless ancient art of making a fire with "hand power." Mr. Lindsay is a primitive skills expert who has long researched "river-cane" technology and who flint-knapps and demonstrates the lance and atl-atl.
Hagood Mill operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.
The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, and more! See Hagood Mill's 1890 Cotton Gin.
There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! So, head on out, grab a plate of Kannarney's Barbeque and enjoy a day at the Mill. Show your support for the Mill and the Pickens County Museum by joining them at this monthly Third Saturday event. The Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just 3 miles north of Pickens or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 off SC Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Hagood Mill is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00, to tour the buildings and grounds and to visit the Mill Site Gift Shop.
"Music in the Mountains 2010" is sponsored by a private benefactor. The Pickens County Museum of Art & History is funded in part by Pickens County, members and friends of the museum and a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
