Coastal Discovery Museum Becomes Smithsonian Affiliate
Written by Natalie Hefter on December 16th 2015.
The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island is has just become a Smithsonian Affiliate, joining over 200 museums, and other educational organizations across the county in this prestigous partnership. Affiliates are chosen for their record of scholarship, professionalism, high quality exhibits, and effective museum educational programs.
Established in 1996, the affiliation program works with those selected to "enrich communities with Smithsonian resources." As affiliate members, Coastal Discovery museum staff, for example, would be able to take advantage of professional development and continuing education programs offered through the institution. Staff members and educators would also have access to the Smithsonian's many wide and varied resources, many of which are online.
Currently, there are four museums in South Carolina that are Smithsonian Affiliates. 3 of the 4 are SCFM members!
- York County Culture and Heritage Museums – Rock Hill
- South Carolina State Museum – Columbia
- The Children’s Museum of the Upcountry – Greenville
- Upcountry History Museum - Furman University - Greenville
